The speaker will address the renewed importance of comparison in anthropological theory-building as well as the necessarily autobiographical aspect of an anthropologist’s experience of making and evaluating comparative analysis.  He will base his observations on fieldwork conducted over several decades, first in Greece (and more briefly in Italy), and latterly in Thailand, and he will sketch some implications for understanding the social and political processes that this research reveals.  He will particularly emphasize the importance of linking the tiny details that often emerge in fieldwork to larger process such as globalization and the advent of the neoliberal economy, and he will explore ways of recognizing the increasingly invisible traces of earlier models of society that nevertheless continue to influence local cultural worlds despite the conditions that these global processes have created.

講座将強調人類學理論建構中再次興起的比較研究之重要性，以及于必要之自傳層面，人類學家創造與評估比較分析之經驗。赫茲菲爾德教授将基于數十年的田野觀察，最初在希臘（較短在意大利），以及之後在泰國，簡述這些研究所呈現出的理解社會與政治過程的寓意，并特别強調将時常在田野中浮現的細微之處與更大之進程，如全球化與新自由主義經濟之出現相聯系的重要性，進而探讨承認“盡管在全球進程所創造之狀況下，越來越多的早期社會模式的隐形印迹依舊在持續影響地方文化世界”的各種途徑。

講者簡介：邁克爾?赫茲菲爾德，哈佛大學人類學系教授、上海外國語大學長江學者，當代國際人類學界最為活躍和多産的資深學者，希臘、意大利、泰國等區域與國别研究的代表人物，在語言人類學、符号學、社會詩學、批判遺産學、視覺人類學等領域造詣頗深，熟練掌握英語、法語、希臘語、意大利語、泰語等語言，已出版專著十餘部，論文百餘篇。
