Caribbean Journey: Conversations with Sidney Mintz

Jacqueline Mintz

In this presentation, the late Professor Sidney Mintz’s wife, Jacqueline, will present an abridged version of a video interview conducted by Dale Tomich with Professor Mintz on his work on Caribbean culture, society and history. She will provide additional commentary. In this interview Professor Mintz talks about his concept of a rural proletariat and that of a proto-peasantry, about slavery, plantations, and the role of race in the Caribbean. He also talks about market women and their trading strategies and the influence of external economic forces on small communities. He explains his views on the relationship between history and anthropology

Jacqueline Wei Mintz was married to Sidney Mintz for over 50 years, during which time she often worked with him on his writings. Ms. Mintz is a retired attorney who specialized in labor and employment law, consumer protection, and the law of higher education. Prior to her legal career, she worked in the Yale University administration from 1971-1976, serving as dean of a Yale residential college and as Associate Provost.
