ABSTRACT

Cultural standing is an unappreciated pragmatic constraint on the way opinions are voiced. The cultural standing of a view is its acceptance in an opinion community. This approach to discourse analysis draws upon the work of Bakhtin and Bourdieu. Expressing awareness of weak cultural standing is different from epistemic modalization to express uncertainty (Lyons 1977) and from mitigating as a politeness strategy (Brown & Levinson 1987).  I discuss four points on a cultural standing continuum: highly controversial, debatable, common opinion, and taken for granted. I argue that in many U.S. speech communities distinctive discourse elements are expected depending on the place of one’s view along that cultural standing continuum.
